UPDATE October 2020:
This stove is no longer in use for many years. I have initially replaced it with the 360 Degrees Furno Stove and Pot Set, then also bought a Jetboil and lately the super light Titanium BRS stove.
Review:
The Coleman Outlander gas stove is not necessarily the lightest stove element on the market today (it seems the exact model I own here is no longer sold but a similar can be found from Coleman) and maybe not the first pick if you are after ultra-light backpacking. It is however an excellent stove for multiple reasons: (a) it is a durable and solid construction; (b) the burner element is fairly large, resulting in a short cook time even for larger sized pots; (c) it can be folded to a small compact size. I like this stove especially for its quick cook time due to the large heating element (large radius). This is one disadvantage of many small, compact stoves - that the heating element radius is so small that it takes a long time to cook anything. The Coleman Outlander has also really good simmer control. One downside is the stove doesn't come with any storage container. In my case the ignition element stopped working after 2 uses so that was a bit disappointing. If you are after a compact sized and relatively light hiking stove with good cooking capabilities, this is a good choice though as it is not as expensive as many of the high-tech, super-light stove and cooking systems.
Pros:
- Attractive price
- Excellent cooking and simmer capabilities
- Solid construction and durable materials
Cons:
- Weight (good for occasional hiking trips but probably a bit too heavy and bulky if you are trying to go super-light and downsize everything in your pack for a multi-day trip
- No storage case
- Self-ignition system a bit flaky, broke after only a few uses
Comment:
A good general use camping and hiking stove, which is not too large and heavy, yet very effective and efficient to cook with.
