Review:
Due to my troubled back I was yet again on the hunt for multi-day hiking sized backpack that is functional, comfortable and lighter than the one I had used previously (Berghaus Verden). After much research I decided to buy the Osprey Atmos as 65L is enough for a decent 5 day hike if you pack only the essentials and have a focus on downsizing every item you bring.
One year earlier I departed on a 5-day hike in the southern Snowy Mountains with my Berghaus Verden pack and I felt the pain after just one long day (see Berghaus Verden review). Although I still had a complete pack weight of about 16kg with the Osprey this time (incl. all food and 3L water), the pack is substantially more comfortable then any of my previous ones. I had no particular issue carrying it even after several long days besides the usual fatigue that is normal on such trips.
One major plus of this pack that I have never had on any other pack before is the fact that the pack doesn't touch your tailbone at all, so if the bottom part of your spine is a bit more pronounced like mine - this is a game changer because you will never have the friction and pressure that usually appears in that area. This assumes of course you pack and adjust the pack correctly. So overall, the best pack I have ever owned and with 1.6kg empty weight it is one of the lightest available for its size while not sacrificing comfort. Only let-down of the pack is that a rain cover is not included and buying one sets you back 50$ - which is a lot just for a bit of plastic really...
Pros:
- One of the lightest packs for its size without compromising on comfort
- Pack doesn't touch your tailbone/bottom part of the spine, this avoids friction and pressure in that area
- Fits camelback and has all the usual functions and compartments
- If you have a sensitive back and regular backpacks don't do it for you - this is an excellent choice
Cons:
- Raincover is not included in the pack, have to purchase extra for about 50$
- Although the pack comes in small, medium and large - it appears it may not be suitable for people with a large waist. The area between the point where the hip belt attaches to the back of the pack is quite narrow - which is good for slim people as the entire pack and hip structure really hugs your waist and provides good support. It may however be too narrow for some people.
Comment:
An awesome backpack, highly recommended for the weight conscience hiker that wants excellent back support and comfort on long day or multi-day hikes.
