Review:
In preparation for a 5-day hiking trip in Summer 2013 and in an attempt to shed some weight from my Lowe Alpine Cerro Torre pack, I bought this Berghaus Verden backpack. For its size, It is one of the lighter packs on the market, with good features and space. While it felt initially very comfortable, I found the back padding of the hip belt (around the lower spine part) too hard after carrying the pack for one entire day. On the second day it my slightly pronounced tail bone and above got very red and sore from the hard padding and I had to wrap my fleece jumper around my waist to keep the pain under control. I also found that the padding of the shoulder straps is initially very soft and thick but wears down to half the thickness after only a few days usage. Furthermore the flexible hip belt construction that follows your motion when walking is generally fine, however the construction with bits of a little aluminium frame and the adjoining plastic parts started to make a squeaking noise after a few trips. Now on every step that you take, the pack squeaks and thats really quite annoying.
Pros:
- Good features
- Excellent weight for its size
Cons:
- Padding of back from hip belt too hard
- Padding of shoulder straps compresses to half the thickness after only a few uses
- Lacks back support for people with back problems (probably ok to carry for only a few hours but will feel lack of support on multi-day, all day trips with fully loaded pack)
- Moving element on back of hip belt makes squeaking noises with every step after using the pack a few times
Comment:
Overall its a good pack and probably ok for people without back problems but I think the back support and padding design of this pack could be improved. Besides that, the features and weight of the pack are great.
